The 'DR-100' Epiphone Acoustic Guitar

The DR-100 steel string acoustic is one of the most popular and affordable of all Epiphone acoustic guitars on the market today. Due to its ease of play, it's an ideal guitar for beginners, as well as having the look, the sound, and the quality of build which first-time players and even professionals hope to find in an acoustic guitar. This acoustic guitar is ideal for bluegrass, folk, rock, country, and anything in-between. Its classic dreadnought shape projects a commanding, resonant sound that's balanced at any volume whether playing loudly or softly. This means you'll be heard by others as well as being able to hear yourself when playing quietly.

Select Spruce Top/Mahogany body

The DR-100 has a Select Spruce top which gives a bright, clear tone that's favoured by many famous players. Spruce is also recognised to be a rich, complex tone wood that breaths and improves with age the more it's played so get practicing! The DR-100's body is made from mahogany and the bridge is made from carved rosewood. The neck of the DR-100 is glued-in at the 14th fret and has a scale of 25.5". The neck has a slim-taper shape which was originally designed by Gibson and first introduced around 1960. The slim-taper neck was designed to promote speed while reducing player fatigue at the same time. It's this neck that makes this acoustic guitar so easy to play.

The PRO-1 Classic Nylon String Acoustic

Epiphone have really thought about the design of the acoustic guitar in general and they've made simple, but clever changes to create an instrument that practically anyone can pick up and play straight away. The result is a collection of acoustic guitars they call the 'PRO-1 Collection'. Epiphone designed PRO-1 acoustic guitars because they wanted to make learning and playing the guitar much easier for all who wanted to start this wonderful journey.

The PRO-1 Collection consists of the nylon string acoustic guitar discussed here and two levels of steel stringed instruments discussed next, one of which has a laminated top and the other which features a solid top.

These PRO-1 Epiphone acoustic guitars are much easier to play than traditional acoustic guitars due to a variety of special new features. They're also very affordable while still able to deliver that full, vibrant sound and great tone that Epiphone is known for. A the time of writing this acoustic guitar is not available on the Amazon UK website.

This great priced Epiphone acoustic guitar has the classical guitarist in mind. Classical guitars are renowned for their wonderful tone, and the better quality, more expensive instruments tend to have far better tone than their less costly, cheaper counterparts. Classical guitars can go for thousands and thousands of dollars/pounds. With that in mind, Epiphone have done a great job here. This classical nylon strung guitar only costs $119.00 at the time of writing this article. Yes, I know it's possible to get an even cheaper nylon strung guitar, but not one that matches this standard in my opinion, as this guitar really is of very good quality for the price tag. 

Thinner Nut Width - Easy-Play Neck

In addition to the great value for money of this Epiphone acoustic guitar, is its ease-of-play when compared to a traditional classical acoustic. Traditional classical guitars have a nut width of 52mm. This means the neck of a traditional classical acoustic is really quite wide making it often difficult to play, especially when playing certain barre chords. Let's not forget also that the neck of any guitar gets even wider as you move up towards the body of the instrument.

The nut width of the PRO-1 Classic nylon string acoustic is 1.75" which converts to 44.45mm. A classical guitar with a nut width of just less than 45.5mm is far easier to play than one with the traditional width of 52mm.

Conclusion

The overall customer rating (at the time of writing) for the PRO-1 Classic Epiphone acoustic guitar on Amazon.com is 4.7 out of a possible 5. Please be aware this customer rating combines both the steel string PRO-1 and this nylon string PRO-1 together to form one overall customer rating for both. If you read the individual reviews however, you'll see that both the nylon and the steel string versions are pretty much loved by all who bought them.

Warning: One other thing to be aware of is that some customers said they never received the gig bag or lessons as offered as part of the package for both the nylon string and steel string versions? Why this is I don't know but I've sent an email to Amazon to try to find out why as I don't want to mislead anyone here.

That aside, I would honestly purchase this guitar myself but unfortunately they don't make a left handed model, alas! Overall the PRO-1 Classic is a great value easy-to-play nylon string acoustic.

The PRO-1 Epiphone acoustic guitar also has lighter gauge strings making it much easier and more fun to play. This is something that I've touched on elsewhere. New acoustic guitars nearly always have heavy gauge strings (usually 12's-14's) fitted as standard. This makes playing much harder and is often the cause of many beginners giving up learning the instrument early on.

Personally, I've always replaced any strings on any new acoustic guitar I've purchased with much lighter strings such as 10's for example. This completely changes the whole feel and ease of play. I always lower the action too. With the Epiphone PRO-1 these simple but fundamental tasks have already been taken care of, with 9's fitted as standard. These extremely light gauge strings are very easy to play with. Personally I think they are a little too light and would restring this guitar with a set of 10's which would have better tone and last longer too.

The PR-150 Epiphone Acoustic Guitar

This well-priced Epiphone acoustic guitar is another great instrument to get started on. It has classic looks, great tone, and is well made with durability in mind. The PR-150 has a select spruce top and mahogany body for a clear, well-balanced classic sound that will only get better over time and with lots of playing.

This guitar is considered by Epiphone to be a true working man's acoustic, a workhorse. The PR-150 has a full-size dreadnought body giving this acoustic guitar a bigger sound than those with reduced body sizes such as the 'PRO-1 Collection' series of acoustic guitars previously discussed.

What Epiphone Say about the PR-150

Conclusion

I have to admit some confusion here for me. There are two colour finishes available and both have different prices and also different overall buyer review ratings. The review rating for the natural finish PR-150 Epiphone acoustic guitar on Amazon.com is 3.4 out of a possible 5. The vintage sunburst version of the same guitar has an overall customer rating of 4.9 out of 5.  At the time of writing this article, the natural finish is $159.99 and the vintage sunburst finish is only $139.99. I have no idea why they are different in price and if anything I would expect the sunburst to cost more. I can only presume the vintage sunburst is in a sale and the natural finish is not?

Confusion aside, overall this Epiphone acoustic guitar seems a good quality, well-built instrument, although there are a few negative customer reviews on the Amazon website for the natural finish option. I'm not entirely certain I would definitely buy this guitar because of this discrepancy.

The Hummingbird Artist & Hummingbird Pro
Epiphone Acoustic Guitars

The Hummingbird is one of the most famous acoustic guitar designs of all time. Based on the original Gibson Hummingbird acoustic guitar, this lower-priced Epiphone version has all the looks and feel of the original Gibson Hummingbird but with a much lower price tag, with a new original Gibson Hummingbird having lofty prices of around £2500 which is roughly $3000 or more?! Bottom line, the Epiphone Hummingbird is possibly one of the nicest looking Epiphone acoustic guitars around for not a lot of money.

Can you really hear the difference between an original Gibson Hummingbird and this very affordable Epiphone copy of the original in the video further down? Can you really hear an extra $/£2500+ worth of quality sound?

At the time of writing this review there are two main versions of this lovely looking acoustic, namely; the 'Hummingbird Artist' and the 'Hummingbird Pro'. There are also variations of these two main models. The differences are not entirely clear without a bit of research, which is totally ok if the information given was consistent with the manufacturer's website which at the time of writing doesn't appear to be the case I hasten to add! No offence Epiphone! The different models of the same theme have caused some confusion it seems which are reflected in some of the reviews listed on the Amazon website. I hope this discussion helps to clarify any uncertainty.

The obvious differences, at least to me, are that the Hummingbird Artist (seen here in the UK) is only acoustic which means it has no electrics, while the 'Hummingbird Pro' is an electro-acoustic guitar. This means the 'Pro' can be played either as an acoustic guitar only, or plugged into an amplifier for extra tones and volume.

Also, the Hummingbird Artist (seen here in the US) doesn't have neck binding. The 'Hummingbird Pro' does have this binding. For those of you who do not know what binding is, it's the white edges of the fretboard where it meets the neck. Binding is also seen on the edges of the top guitars where the top meets the sides. More expensive guitars tend to have binding for decorative, visual enhancement. Binding is actually part of the reason why they are more expensive and it is only generally added to an instrument which is made from fine, quality materials. It is more readily seen on not so expensive instruments nowadays though.

The Hummingbird Pro also has a solid top but as far as I'm aware the 'Hummingbird Artist' doesn't. A solid top is said to produce a better quality sound in an acoustic than a laminated top. The 'Hummingbird Pro' also seems to be constructed of 'select' woods meaning better quality materials, i.e. specially selected. Again, better woods are said to make the overall tone better.

There is also a Hummingbird Dove Pro which is made of a solid spruce top with maple back and sides which is slightly different to the 'Hummingbird Pro' which has mahogany back and sides but also a solid spruce top. There's only one bad review which contradicts the other really great reviews about this acoustic. Going by the reviews, I personally think the Hummingbird Artist is without doubt a very nice guitar and I would buy this guitar myself.

The DR-212 Epiphone Acoustic Guitar

This big sounding Epiphone acoustic guitar is a true twelve string instrument. For those of you who are unfamiliar with a twelve string, the twelve-string guitar is a steel-string guitar (acoustic or electric) that has twelve strings in six pairs. A twelve string guitar is played by fretting and picking/strumming the two strings of each pair together as one string. The strings are arranged and tuned so that the first string of each pair to be struck on a downward motion is one octave higher than the string it is paired with.

12-string guitars produce a much fuller, richer tone than a regular six string instrument. The spaces between the individual strings within each pair are narrower than the spaces between the strings of a regular six-string guitar. The neck of a twelve string guitar is also slightly wider to allow for the extra six strings. The DR-212 neck width is 1.75". 

Ideal Tone-woods Used

The DR-212 features a select Spruce top which, as I've already mentioned, begins to breathe and improve with age and the more it's played.  

A 12-string guitar is under a lot of stress between the nut and bridge and the rosewood fretboard of the DR-212 is proven to be both long lasting and a perfect partner tonally to its elect Spruce top. The body of this great sounding Epiphone acoustic guitar is made from solid mahogany which offers a woody, warm tone that's both punchy and balanced.

What Epiphone Say about the DR-212

The DR-212 is a true 12-string acoustic guitar with the big sound and fine engineering you expect from Epiphone. The DR-212 is not just a dreadnought with 6 extra strings. We designed the DR-212 to take the stress of extra strings and not just support the Spruce top but provide the proper bracing so what you hear is a balanced, cutting, and attention-getting tone. The 12-string dreadnought has often been thought of as the classic-go to guitar for blues, folk, rock, country, and everything in-between.

We know you want your 12-string acoustic guitar tone to be distinctive and for your instrument to not come unglued. A lot of 12-string guitar makers expect you to be satisfied with an ‘ok’ sound hoping that the novelty of having a 12-string will detract from the fact it sounds thin.

The AJ-220S Epiphone Acoustic Guitar

The AJ-220S is an excellent guitar whether you're a beginner or an experienced professional. It offers exceptional value for money for any level of player. This great sounding Epiphone acoustic guitar features a unique advanced jumbo design with a solid Sitka Spruce top and a solid select mahogany body.

The AJ-220S delivers a bigger sound than the PRO-1 and PRO-1 Plus acoustics due to its larger body size as can be heard in the video further down. This makes it ideal for playing with others where you want to be heard and not drowned out, but it's also ideal for playing alone too. Either way, I think this guitar sounds really nice and of decent quality with good sounding bass notes and defined trebles and mid-ranges.

Let's not forget also that the sound will only get better with age and with more play as the solid Sitka Spruce top and solid mahogany back and sides mature over time. To be totally honest I'm amazed that Epiphone can afford to sell this acoustic at the ridiculously low price of $199.00 (at the time of writing) given the solid tone-woods used in its construction. Solid woods are really not something that you'd expect to find in an acoustic guitar with such a low price tag.

Ease of Play?

The AJ-220S has heavier strings than the PRO-1 Collection acoustics with 12's fitted as standard. This contributes to this guitars bigger sound. If I were to buy this guitar I may restring it with a set of 10's or 11's maybe depending on what sound I was looking for and how it felt overall.

The AJ-220S Epiphone acoustic guitar also has a slightly longer neck (scale length) than the PRO-1 Collection acoustics. This gives it a better tone but can make it slightly more difficult to play nearer the nut, but only slightly and depending on the size of your hands and what you're playing etc.

This acoustic also has the SlimTaper neck profile making playing easier than many other acoustic guitars.

The AJ-220S has a 3.4 out of 5 customer review on the Amazon website. Not a great result overall for this guitar which is a little confusing after you listen to the demonstrations in the video. I will say that all wood moves and any severe change in temperature will make it move, often considerably so. Anyway, take a look at the reviews and see what you think.

In my opinion, this is definitely one of the best value Epiphone acoustic guitars available if you're looking for a bigger, more defined sound that has quality of build and sound projection. I'm sure you can hear the sound quality from the demonstrations in the video above. Yes I would definitely buy this guitar without a doubt but personally I would change the strings to a slightly lighter gauge in which case I would probably prefer the PRO-1 or PRO-1 Plus with its smaller body and already fitted lighter gauge strings. It all depends on what you want and how much you have to spend.

The PRO-1 Plus is the next level up from the standard PRO-1 steel string acoustic. The PRO-1 Plus has a Solid Spruce top which projects a superior sound and tone to the lesser quality and cheaper laminated top of the standard PRO-1. This high quality Epiphone acoustic guitar also features all of the PRO-1 Collection's latest innovations to make playing and learning the guitar much easier and a lot more fun for all who want to start.

This lovely Epiphone acoustic guitar has beautiful 5-layer Ivory and Black binding around the top of the body and 1-layer ivory binding around the back of the body and edges of the finger board. This PRO-1 Plus Epiphone acoustic guitar has a 5 out of 5 customer review on the Amazon website, although there are only a couple of reviews at the time of writing this article. I've looked elsewhere on the internet though and found good reports of the quality of materials used and the high standard that this acoustic guitar has been put together.

Although this acoustic guitar does cost more than the standard PRO-1, I personally think it's worth the extra if you can afford to pay it. Yes I would definitely buy this guitar myself without a shadow of a doubt. In fact I've been trying to get hold of as left handed model as I believe this is one of the best value Epiphone acoustic guitars available today.

The EJ-200 Artist Epiphone Acoustic Guitar

The EJ-200 Epiphone acoustic guitar has a jumbo-sized body making it a big sounding acoustic. This guitar has lots of Epiphone qualities at an affordable price. It features lovely 6-layer black and white binding to the body and an easy-play 1960's SlimTaper neck with medium frets that makes playing chords and rhythm much easier.

The hand-glued dovetail neck joint also contributes to the EJ-200 Artist's deep rich bass, clear mid-ranges, and brilliant highs that fill a room with jumbo-sized projection and volume. The solid rosewood fingerboard is fully bound and inlaid with pearloid dot inlays for a simple but classy look. Its reverse belly rosewood bridge has a compensated saddle for solid intonation and tone. This is a very nice Epiphone acoustic guitar if you're looking for a big sound but don't have a big budget. It's available in vintage sunburst and natural finishes.

This big sounding Epiphone acoustic guitar has 4 out of 5 on the Amazon website, and although there's only one review on Amazon, I've looked at other places on the internet and found good feed back from buyers of this great guitar for the money. All things considered, I think it's one of the nicest looking and best value Epiphone acoustic guitars around. 

My overall opinion of Epiphone Acoustic Guitars

Remember, Epiphone are actually a sub-company of Gibson. Epiphone guitars are therefore made by Gibson which are well-known for their very high quality instruments. Epiphone guitars are a great option for those who cant afford a Gibson and there are in fact famous artists that can afford a Gibson but choose to play an Epiphone.

I personally don't own any Epiphone guitars but only because that option just hasn't presented itself mainly because I'm a left handed player. I tend to see a left handed guitar, and, if I like it and can afford it at the time, I will buy it.

From my research, my overall impression of Epiphone guitars and Epiphone acoustic guitars in particular, is one of a very positive nature.
